While I think Obama will be able to get reasonable legislation passed, even without a filibuster proof majority. We will not know until it happens. If the obstructionist republicans try and hold up every piece of legislation, then we may be in gridlock. Hopefully not.

We will have to see. Obama has the persuasive personality to get things done on capitol hill. Obama has been able to push health care legislation, despite the fact that it is unpopular with the people, as he feels it is the right thing to do. That should show you that he will be able to pass other legislation, that is less controversial, without a filibuster proof majority. But, again, we will have to wait and see.

For your information, my definition of retaining the house and the senate is just keeping a majority. The same definition that most people have had since the republican party was a party. As far a losing seats in the midterm elections, this has been a fairly consistent trend in modern politics for the incumbent presidents party to lose a few seats.
